“Teachers and lifelong learning: Beyond continuous professional development “

The paper attempts to describe three main trends in teachers’ lifelong learning, namely in-service training,continuous professional development and the development of competences. It also tries to link them with the social and political background in which each of them emerged, with a parallel target to combine them with lifelong education and lifelong learning as main notions. In order to do so, we start with investigating the convergencies and divergencies between the above trends and continue with current trends in professional development and the lifelong learning of teachers. Finally, we attempt to present the discourse on competencies, as it is expressed mainly by international organizations, a discourse that is connected with skills, attitudes and dispositions and as such contributes to the formation of teachers as educational subjects.
